Why skinny jeans will never go out of style

Despite other styles being favoured on the catwalks and runways, skinny jeans are a perennially popular shape as they are so easy to style. They are a wardrobe staple as they go effortlessly with pretty much anything, can easily take you from day to night with a simple switch of accessories, and with a few styling tricks, they have the potential to elongate your legs and lift your bum to perfect peachy proportions. They are loved by women everywhere and for this reason, despite what the designers bring to us each season they will never be out of fashion or off-trend.

Women favour skinnies over other styles because they are the ultimate throw-on garment that requires very little effort to look great. As long as they are well cut, and styled to suit your proportions, they will solve a multitude of wardrobe dilemmas from a night out on the town worn with a statement top, killer heels and some fabulous earrings to a country walk, paired with wellington boots and a tweed jacket and everything in-between. As long as they have plenty of stretch they are incredibly comfortable, and ridiculously easy to care for, as they don’t require as much washing as other garments and actually improve with a bit of wear and tear.

Finally, a great pair of skinny jeans can be considered a ‘neutral wardrobe staple’, meaning, you could wear the same pair over and over for 5 days on the trot (paired with different tops) and no one would absolutely bat an eyelid. They are undoubtedly the foundation of a multitude of fabulous outfits.

Top picks, I know the high street is very tempting with its lower prices and range of exciting colours and finishes, but this is absolutely a case of quality winning over quantity, and buying cheaper is a false economy as your denim will not last as long, and probably not fit as well. Donna Aida is known as the ‘Jeans Queen’, is adored by celebrities all over the world for her flattering cuts and has an excellent service where they recommend the perfect pair to suit your body shape - which is so much more than just the width of the leg. Alternatively, Graysey London has invented the ‘jeak’ an ingenious cross between a pair of jeans and a legging, which are not only amazingly comfortable but elongate your frame - they are a little bit different and well worth a look.

Look out for a curved waistband that is higher at the back and lower at the front, which will lift your bum and pull in your tummy. If the side seam on the outer thigh is slightly positioned to the front, it will improve the overall leg profile, the yoke at the back should have a nice deep V shape, and you want large-ish pockets that are positioned fairly high up for the perkiest rear. Buy less but buy better, sourcing a premium denim with a good elastane ratio and high-quality hardware will be a far better investment in the long run. Wash at a cold temperature and dry cold to get the maximum life out of your denim.

Remember that lighter colours highlight and bring forwards, and darker colours diminish and push back, so if there is a wash on the jeans, pay attention to the placement of this. A light coloured area down the front of the thighs for example will only make them appear larger. Darker denim is always more flattering and us usually smarter too, personally I avoid jeans that are overly distressed but that’s just a trend thing. The ultimate rule is always if you love it and you feel good - then wear it for you and shine all day!
